NOVEMBER AUCTION OF PROMISES FOR ‘THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH’ SCHEME

Since the new term began, our ‘Duke of Edinburgh Award’ team has been preparing for an ‘Auction of Promises’. The idea is for companies and individuals to pledge ‘promises’ to raise money to support the activities in which the team is involved. So far, Ms. Casey reports, there have been pledges ranging from ‘a basket of ironing’ to ‘Newcastle United tour tickets’! Altogether, about 60-70 pledges have come in so far, but many more are needed to make the evening a success. On 9th November, pledges will be auctioned off to the highest bidders, with parents and local firms being invited to participate in the evening’s entertainment.
Please get in your pledges this week, if possible. Contact Ms. Casey or Mr. Jefferson at the school - by writing or by telephoning 870003.

MOTOROLA FILM STARS IMPRESSED THE PRODUCER!

In the summer term, St. Michael’s was asked by the Citizenship Foundation if we would co-operate in the making of a teaching film about how to set up Youth Parliaments in school. As a result, London-based producer, Camilla Byk, and Fiona Hogarth of the Citizenship Foundation, brought a camera crew to our school to spend a day filming our Parliament in action in Wiseman House, interviewing pupils in the Garden of Remembrance and filming props being made in the Technology block. About 40 of our pupils, including Ruth Parkinson, Andrea Morgan, Chris Young, Jess Davies, Hollie Peeke, Andrew Tallentire and Chris Rickard, spent five hours in producing the step-by-step guide about what to do and what to avoid. Carl Jackson, Kate McGough, Joanne Bain and Tom Redfearn were among several members of the 2000 Leavers’ Group who returned to take part. The whole venture was very successful and the half-hour film is excellent. Camilla Byk sent a lengthy message of thanks to everybody, saying that our team had been wonderful to work with and that she was grateful for all the patience, enthusiasm and skill shown by our students. The film is now being distributed to schools and colleges throughout Great Britain.

VALUABLE WORK

As Mrs. Kearney puts the finishing touches to her very popular Family Quiz Night, perhaps mention should be made of the valuable work done by many people in raising extra funds for the school. All kinds of opportunities are made possible by PTA events and the school could not have made progress in many areas without this wondeful support. A great deal of money is also required to ensure that the classrooms are kept in excellent condition and, obviously some of the necessary finance comes through capitation. But, it is the continued work of the PTA that ensures Mr. Maxwell is able to say ‘Yes’ to so many initiatives. During the holiday, these areas were re-decorated: Hinsley, Griffin and Vaughan Houses; the History and Geography Departments; the Main Hall, where you will see we also have new side and stage curtains. Additionally, new furniture and some carpets were provided for the Houseblocks and a new carpet was laid in the main corridor, adjacent to the English Department.
