St. Michael's School, Billingham, Stockton-on-Tees,

I will start by offering a special welcome to our new pupils, teachers and parents and by welcoming back all those who were with us last year. I hope the year ahead will be one you will enjoy. The excellent GCSE results announced in late August set the seal on twelve months of hard work for pupils and staff. Coming not long after the very pleasing Key Stage 3 SATs results, they certainly provide a boost for the new school year. The next edition of 'Home Links' will be the one hundredth in the line of 'Links' news magazines for parents. They stretch back to 1986 and they show that, while academic progress is very important, there is so much more involved in providing pupils with full educations.

In the summer term, we had visits from two different kinds of 'inspectors', Mr. Kerrigan, who is an HMI, and Professor Grace, who carried out his research on behalf of the National Commission on Education. Both indicated that they were impressed with the ways in which staff care and provide for the pupils in spheres beyond the academic and I feel proud that independent outsiders should come to such conclusions.

As I glance through the 'proofs' of this publication, there is plenty of evidence that the good work is continuing. For example, Mrs. Kearney has organised another of her successful 'Family Quiz Nights', the orienteering team has finished first in a schools' competition and our Human Rights team has reached the national finals. I thank everybody associated with St. Michael's for their continued hard work and I hope you have a successful and happy year.
