GCSE RESULTS WERE BEYOND ALL EXPECTATIONS

The academic year 2000-2001 again proved to be one of success in external examinations for our pupils. Following news of some excellent results in the summer term at Key Stage 3, the achievements of our summer leavers exceeded all forecasts.

Nowadays schools are set targets by their Local Education Authorities for passes at grades A*-C and this is based on previous testing of pupils. That St. Michael’s 2001 target was surpassed by more than 4% says a great deal about the commitment of the pupils and the expertise and hard work from their teachers. Parents, too, have played an important part in encouraging their children to make the most of their opportunities. There were many outstanding individual achievements, some of which are noted elsewhere in Home Links and others which will be recognised publicly when we come to November’s ‘Celebration of Achievement Evening’.

Here is a summary of the 2001 GCSE results:

100% of our pupils gained at least one G.C.S.E. pass;

Over 99% of our pupils gained at least five G.C.S.E. passes;

60% of our pupils gained at least five higher grades A*-C G.C.S.E. passes.

We congratulate our ex-students and hope that their hard work and successes will inspire all those sitting examinations this year and in the future.

RACIAL JUSTICE SUNDAY

A piece of drama for Racial Justice Sunday was performed in local churches by a group of pupils who worked with St. Michael’s Drama Department to create a series of tableaux telling the story of Rose Blanche. Sarah Kane, Nuala Coyle, Katy Lee, Charlie Kelly, Liam Geoghegan, Nicola O’Brien, Louise Fell and Merike Lawlor were the pupils involved and their presentation was very well-received. St. Michael’s Citizenship Co-ordinator, Mrs. Davies, was really proud of our students and they went on to make the same presentation in school assemblies.

LOOKING IN AT THE SCIENCE CLUB

Mrs. Colclough and the Science Department are inviting Year 7 pupils to join the Science Club. On Thursdays, between 3.15 and 4 o’clock, you can participate in lots of exciting experiments and activities.

As members of the British Association of Young Scientists (BAYS), you can work towards BAYS certificates. Everything takes place in Lab. 5, so do think about coming along.
