SUCCESSFULLY MAKING THEIR WAY AT SECONDARY

SCHOOL LEVEL .....ST. MICHAEL’S NEW YEAR 7 PUPILS

St. Michael’s provides a purpose-built Housebock for each of its Year Groups and we find that Year 7 pupils very quickly adapt to life in Vaughan House.

The Head of Year 7 is Mr. Matthews and he says that the pupils who have recently joined St. Michael’s in September have already proved keen to become involved in school life and that many have already taken on responsibilities, something we always encourage within pupils.

Joe Walker and Joanne Bowden have joined the Science Club, Michaela Morton, Steven Nesbit and Jessica Kane-Fidgeon are already members of the Guitar Club and Holly Keenan and Kate Wharry have signed up for lessons in Modern Dance.

Soon, all of Year 7 will be electing members of their Student Council. This Council enables pupils to have a real say in Vaughan House and in school life in general and Mr. Matthews hopes to publish names of those elected in the near future.

A tradition within St. Michael’s is the ‘Welcome Mass’ for Year 7. Among those who volunteered to do readings were Tim Foley and Sophie Featonby. Drama plays an important part in assemblies and Masses in the school and Sally Crosby, Helen Lindsay, Mark Wem, Kirstie Connor, John Tasker and Lindsay Youdale were among the volunteers for the presentation in this Mass.

All of Year 7 are preparing for a History Primary Sources Day, or have taken part in an oral history session. Miss Peason says that the Primary Source Days have been a huge success. Photographs are being taken of pupils with all of the aretefacts they are bringing in and they will be put on display in the near future.

Head of ICT, Mr. Kelly, is already very impressed with Year 7’s approaches to their computer work and says that representatives from each class will be taking part in special training as Junior ICT Technicians. The training programme will be operated by the Year 8 pupils who qualified last year and older students will be providing overall supervision for this scheme.

Making the step from Primary School is a big one, but our new Year 7 pupils are adapting very quickly and seem to be enjoying secondary school life.
