2000 ‘CELEBRATION OF ACHIEVEMENT EVENING’

Last night was a very special night for our 2000 Leavers’ Group. They returned to St. Michael’s to celebrate their achievements with teachers, parents and governors. In the summer. their academic results were outstanding. Starting from a base well above both local and national averages, and following the outstanding results of the previous Year Group, the 2000 candidates improved grades even further.

At all levels, they proved to be high achievers in relation to other schools. Over 61 per cent obtained at least five 5 Grades A*-C and all students achieved passes at GCSE.

Guest speaker was successful local businessman, Bill Browne, who has given wonderful support to St. Michael’s over the years. Sarah Bunker was presented with an important national award, from the Princess Diana Memorial Trust, and two new trophies were presented to students in memory of Mr. Parker and Mr. Milburn, who was a governor of our school for many years. Other awards included:

  • Drama – Lisa Wild;
  • English – Andrew Napoleon and Graham Connor;
  • Mathematics – Ben Reeve and Carl Jackson;
  • Physical Education – Toni Simpson and Stephen Pitman;
  • Student Council Trophy – Laura Daly;
  • Shaun Lowery Trophy – Marc Hand;
  • Motorola Awards – Kathryn McGough, Joanne Bain and Rebecca Keay

FINDING TIME FOR PRAYER

When Mr. Dunning and 7H recently requested more information about the Rosary, this inspired a time of prayer. The whole class took part in brief explanation of the prayer and had the opportunity to say the Rosary as a group. The pupils were given a Rosary card and Rosary beads for their own use and said they enjoyed the experience.

Lay Chaplain, Mrs. Blackwell, says that she hopes to continue to provide for a short time of prayer with the Rosary throughout Year 7.

The Tuesday prayer group recently enjoyed the introduction of a visitor to the group – Peter Tucker, formerly of the Youth Mission Team and a past pupil of St. Michael’s. He has shared his experience of working with YMT and led the pupils in prayer. Following on from the success of his visits, Mrs. Blackwell says that Peter will continue to come in on Tuesday Lunchtimes because our pupils have enjoyed having another young person to share their faith and to encourage them in prayer.

PARENTS TURNED OUT IN FORCE FOR THEIR OFSTED MEETING

As presumably everybody connected with St. Michael’s knows by now, there will be an OFSTED Inspection of the school during the week commencing 27th November. Parents have already had the chance to complete questionnaire forms and return them to the Inspectors. When Inspectors held their pre-inspection meeting with parents, there was an excellent turn-out.

Once the Inspection is completed, in due course reports will be available to parents and to the whole community. No doubt, there will be coverage in the next edition of Home Links, too. In the meantime, thanks to all who have made contributions so far.
