IT’S CHARLOTTE'S CHRISTMAS CARD AGAIN!
| Overcoming competition from more than
500 other pupils and for the second year in a row, Charlotte Simpson
of Year 8 has emerged as winner in our ‘Design a Christmas Card’
challenge.
It is the 15th year in which Head of Art, Miss Pearson, has challenged students to produce festive designs and, with the winner having her/his entry professionally published as the school’s official Christmas Card, the competition has become increasingly popular. Miss Pearson says, “No previous pupil has ever won twice. Charlotte’s achievement is particularly praiseworthy because she is so young - and she faced strong competition from senior students who are doing Art to GCSE level.” |

Mr. Maxwell was asked to judge this year’s competition and he adds, “There were no names on the designs, only code numbers, so I had no idea that I had selected Charlotte’s entry as the winner for the second year running. She really has a talent in designing cards and I am sure that some of the big card firms would be impressed with her ideas.”
Charlotte’s winning design themes have been: 2000 – the Dove of Peace
2001 – a silhouette of the Manger
Cards went on sale this week - price 10p each - and the Northern Echo covered Charlotte’s story in Tuesday’s newspaper.
* Runners-up in the competition were Charlotte Wilkinson of 7C and Katie Devitt of 9A. Well done to them, too!

GOOD HEALTH, EVERYBODY! St. Michael’s School is currently working towards achieving the National Healthy Schools Standard. There are three levels of accreditation – bronze, silver and gold – and the school has to satisfy set criteria in a number of themes related to pupils’ health. Initially, we are looking at ‘healthy eating’ - and a Healthy Eating Week is planned for the New Year. Mr. Nicholson is the teacher in charge of the initiative and he says sponsorship has come from the Billingham Action Team for Jobs. If any parents would like information about the Action Team, he would be pleased to provide it. |
CHRIS AND CARLA WERE OUTWARD BOUND When young people from all over the north-east gathered at the Peat Rigg Centre in Pickering for a Justice and Peace Outward Bound weekend, Chris Frail and Carla Walker were St. Michael’s representatives. The two Year 9 pupils really enjoyed the experience, which included tree-climbing and abseiling sessions.
