GOOD LUCK TO ALL OF OUR YEAR 11 STUDENTS

The end of two years of hard work is in sight for our senior students, as they spend most of the next month or so making their final examination preparations and sitting their GCSEs. They have been an excellent Year Group and everybody at St. Michael’s wishes them well in the exams and for the future. Several events held to mark their years in our school have taken place and are noted elsewhere in this edition of Home Links. Year 9’s David Stringer has interviewed Mrs. Carroll about the Leavers’ Books they all received and has written this report:
‘This year, members of the departing top form were each presented with a Leavers’ Book. The idea was put forward by their Student Council, and with the support of Mrs. Carroll, the Leavers’ Book has now been published.

The contents of the book include photographs taken during their five years at St. Michael's, poetry written by the students and Miss Clarke, and each student contributed their own personal message. Hopefully, in years to come the book will provide many happy memories of their days here at St. Michael's.’

DESERVED RECOGNITION FOR OUR PUPIL LIBRARIANS

Earlier this month, ten of our Year 8 pupils reaped the fruits of their labours, when they attended an awards ceremony at Henry Smith School in Hartlepool. Since November, they have been participating in a Pupil Librarian Training Scheme, organised by School Resource Services and, with support from our Librarian, Mrs. Grant, they have worked really hard for their certificates. Working really well as a team, they produced a most creative display of science and science fiction material - ranging from books, CD Roms and tapes to research carried out on the Internet. Other pupils can now borrow this material from the library.

Terry Deary, author of over 90 books, including the very popular Horrible History series, gave a very witty presentation and presented certificates. Many parents said how proud they were of the pupils, how smart they all looked and how much they had enjoyed the whole experience. One of the most impressive projects undertaken by our team was an interactive library program. This allows pupils to log on and find information about new books purchased and books already in stock, which have been reviewed by pupils from all year groups. They can also find information about forthcoming events and competitions, homework help and GCSE revision stock held within our Resources Centre.

Andrew Cheeseman of 8C created this program and Mrs. Grant decided that it should become a permanent source of information for pupils and library staff. Andrew has agreed to update this program regularly. The project so impressed Kay Ross, SRS Librarian, that she as asked for a demonstration at the next school librarians’ meeting, something that took place this week. Mrs. Grant's special guest that day was Head of English, Mrs. Thomas, who is always very supportive of library activities.
