CELEBRATING EASTER - A TIME OF GREAT HOPE

Easter is a time of great hope and joy for all Christians and I wish everybody connected with St. Michael’s a happy and holy holiday. Of course for some, it is a time when perhaps they become increasingly aware of approaching examinations. Our Year 9 pupils have their first taste in St. Michael’s of sitting public examinations when the SATs come along in May. Some of the Year 11 group have already taken certain exams and they will soon be in the midst of their written papers. They know that their futures are likely to be affected by the results they achieve and it is a time of considerable pressure for them. Elsewhere in Home Links you will find reminders of exam timetables and it is obviously important that our students should find time to work hard during the holiday. I wish them well.

There has been plenty of good news this term, as this edition of Home Links shows. January’s Ofsted Report was first-rate, with pupils, teachers, parents and governors receiving considerable praise. The Charity Committee has reached its target of raising £2000 for very poor people living in the Third World and pupils responded really well to the challenges put before them on Comic Relief Day. Wherever I look around the school, there is evidence of determination and commitment and I always feel very proud when I take visitors on a tour. Most recently, the Department for Education and Employment has marked the successes of St. Michael’s with an Award for Excellence.

Within any large community, I suppose it is inevitable that there will also be sadder times, but we were all shocked when we learnt of the tragic death of one of our former pupils, Helen Sanderson, who was studying for her ‘A’ levels at Bede College. Helen was such a vibrant, good-natured and hard-working person and she involved herself in every aspect of school life, from the musicals and Talent Shows to the Motorola. She is very sadly missed by so many in St. Michael’s and it was the pupils’ idea that the production of ‘My Fair Lady’ should be dedicated to her memory. I know she will remain in our prayers and our thoughts. To her family, we offer our deepest sympathy. May she rest in peace.

IN THE INTEREST OF SAFETY.....

Parents and others who bring pupils to school in cars are asked to drop them in the bus bay areas and not to use the roadways into the school yards between 8.30 a.m. to 9.05 a.m. and 3 p.m. and 3.30 p.m.. The yards and pathways tend to be very busy during these times and we obviously want to avoid any chance of accidents happening.

IMPORTANT! PLEASE NOTE

St. Michael’s closes for Easter on Friday 6th April at 3.10 p.m. and the school re-opens at 8.50 a.m. on Monday, 23rd April. The Whitsun half-term holiday begins on Friday 25th May at 3.10 p.m.and the school re-opens at 8.50 a.m. on Monday, 4th June. Finally, we break up for the summer holiday on Thursday, 19th July at 3.10 p.m..
