OUTWARD BOUND VISIT WAS A HUGE SUCCESS

Fifteen Year 10 pupils recently visited the Outward Bound Trust Centre on the banks of Ullswater for a week of challenging activities. They were joined by a party from Grangefield School in a week partly sponsored by ‘North East Truck and Van’. Working in three mixed groups, pupils were learning how to work with others and they were testing themselves in activities including fell walking, canoe sailing, raft building and rock climbing. They even participated in a 'sleepout' in a mountain hut on the slopes of Helvellyn!

Mr. Larsson says that accommodation and facilities were excellent, as were the instructors, but that it came as a shock to some people that they had to make their beds, clean their rooms and do household chores around the Centre! (Are there smiles on the faces of some parents?)

Altogether, the week was a great success. St. Michael’s pupils who made the trip are Adam Kavanagh, Natalie Clarke, Kathryn Ditchburn, Andrew Doyle, Paul Harrison, Gregg Henderson, Nicholas Hodgman, Christopher Jones, Jonathan Kelly, Cait-Anne McShane, Kirsty Mullen, Craig Purkis, Jessica Sauvary, Danny Simpson and Rebecca Teasdale. Lastly, because the week was so successful, the school is setting up an Outdoor Activities Club so that pupils of all year groups can go away on weekends and in the holidays to take part challenging activities like those at Ullswater.

UNIVERSITY VISITS

Mrs. Carroll would like to thank Richard Taylor and the Liaison team at Durham University and Angela Wood and the Liaison team at Teesside University for all their hard work this term. Our pupils have thoroughly enjoyed their visits to both universities and it has a been an inspiration to them to experience university life.

70 Year 10 students completed an Ace afternoon at Durham University;

45 Years 10 and 11 students spent an enjoyable evening at Teesside University;

More recently, 130 Year 9 pupils have attended Ace afternoons at Durham and the remainder of the Year will attend next term.

Year 10 students have also taken part in a number of special lectures and subject days at Teesside, involving Science, Media and CDT.
