General aim: To revise some of the skills learnt by pupils in Year 7 and introduce pupils to the different methods of showing height on a map. To explain as geographers how we can follow a route on a map.

Glossary at beginning of topic will familiarise the pupils with the keywords to be used, their meanings and spellings.

Keywords can be displayed around the classroom.

This is a revision topic and can be gone through quickly.

Students have done this at the beginning of Year 7. Some will have forgot and a few may not have been able to do it in the first place.

Check with test papers from last year's work.

Define methods and terms.

Explain the difficulties of putting something that is 3d on a flat piece of paper.

Relief map of Britain.

Work on OS map.

Work will need to be done on the board to get this concept across

Explain how contours are drawn.

Emphasise that contours close together means it is steep…etc.

Complete unfinished contour map and convert to layer colouring.

Describe the route from home to school as a starting point.
