Introduction	Glossary and title page Pupils design a title page to illustrate this topic. Pupils write a glossary of key words to be used in this topic.	Glossary at beginning of topic will familiarise the pupils with the keywords to be used, their meanings and spellings. Keywords can be displayed around the classroom.
Maps are drawn from above.	Plans 1 & 2 pp. 14 –17 Basic Skills in Geography 1 Homework task – Ex E & F p. 17 Plan of room in pupil’s home.	Brainstorm e.g. Why are maps drawn from above? Examples of objects drawn from above. Try to get over the advantages of a bird’s eye view compared to an oblique view. Encourage pupil’s to be inventive doing the homework. E.g. designing their room in a shoe box etc.
Direction	How can we show direction? Foundations p.108 Qu. 1 – 4 Summary & Extras Activity sheet 7.1 Extension sheets available	Define what maps and plans are. Describe different types of maps and their uses. Draw eight-point compass for a wall display. Give directions around the classroom or on a plan of the school.
Distance	How can we measure distance? Foundations p.110 Qu. 1 – 5 Summary Extension sheets available	Use of a ruler. Explain idea of scale. Extension work for more able could be to draw their desk or even the classroom to scale.
Symbols	How do we use map symbols? Foundations p.112 Qu. 1 & 2. Qu. 3 can be done on paper. Summary Activity sheet 7.2 & sheet 7.3	Brainstorm the use of symbols. Invent symbols for common features, TV, car, etc. Explain why symbols are used on an OS map. Pupils can draw map of an imaginary island using OS symbols.
Co-ordinates	What are grid references? Foundations p. 114 Qu. 1 – 5 Summary & Extras Various extension sheets	Explain grid references on the board. Use local map to give grid references of local places. Pupils can play battleships and cruisers game
	How do we use six figure grid references? Foundations p. 116 Qu. 1 – 4 Summary Various extension sheets	Many find six figure grid references hard. Explain idea on the board. Encourage pupils to use a ruler while they are working it out. Extension sheets for more able, while teacher works one – one with those having problems.
ICT	Use of Multimap website to complete ICT activity on their local area. Multimap lUse of Map Detective Program	Pupils use the internet to tackle the online enquiry of their local area. Use of internet. Use of word and the drawing package within word. Map work game – Map Detective
