Map Skills - duration 7/8 weeks

General aim: To introduce pupils to mapworkand help them gain an understanding of direction, scale, symbols and co-ordinates.

ICT: Use of the internet. Use of the O.S. website. Use of Multimap website to complete ICT activity.

Glossary and title page

Pupils design a title page to illustrate this topic.

Pupils write a glossary of key words to be used in this topic.

Glossary at beginning of topic will familiarise the pupils with the keywords to be used, their meanings and spellings.

Keywords can be displayed around the classroom.

Maps are drawn from above.

Basic Skills in Geography 1

Plan of room in pupil’s home.

Brainstorm e.g. Why are maps drawn from above? Examples of objects drawn from above.

Try to get over the advantages of a bird’s eye view compared to an oblique view.

Encourage pupil’s to be inventive doing the homework. E.g. designing their room in a shoe box etc.
