SECTION TWO (Assessments) (Risk ratings in brackets)

Task/Activity to be assessed: River Fieldwork – Skelton Beck Saltburn

Considerations:

General:

Danger from falling into Beck. Although Beck is very shallow there is still a danger to non-swimmers and swimmers who may be knocked out when falling in. Or if Beck was in particularly full flow after heavy rain. (A3)

Specific:

  1. Trips & Falls – water hazard shallow water – ankle to knee deep (A3)
  2. Dirty water – water appears clean but may be dirty and polluted A3)
  3. Wading into beck – danger of infection from cuts or bare feet (A3)
  4. Weir over beck and a few unsafe areas - danger of falling into beck (A3)

SECTION THREE: (Proposed action)

Proposed action to reduce risk to an acceptable level (new or revised method of working).

All the proposed actions should reduce risks to a safe level.

General:

Staff to accompany and supervise pupils at all times. Staffs to carry certain equipment – mobile phones, first aid kit, throw line. All pupils to have talk in school prior to visit explaining standards, behaviour, expectations and country code. Similar talk to take place at drop off point and on site.

Specific:

  1. Trips & Falls – pupils to be accompanied by staff at all times. Staff to have throw line with them at all times.
  2. Dirty water – pupils to be given instructions about cleaning themselves after being in or near the water. No food to be eaten at Beck side. Anti Bacterial wipes to be made available.
  3. Wading into Beck - Any pupil with cuts not be allowed in the water. Pupils to be issued with wellies or encouraged to bring their own before entering the water. Towels available.
  4. Weir over beck and a few unsafe areas – pupils to be instructed about keeping away from the weir and the other unsafe areas. Pupils only allowed in the specific area where fieldwork will take place

SECTION FOUR: (Further action)

  • Leader to see Senior Management Team to ensure that staff are all issued with mobile phones, first aid kits & throw line.
  • Leader to ensure that meeting takes place prior to visit with all staff to outline correct procedures to be followed.
  • Leader to ensure that meeting takes place prior to visit with all pupils to outline correct procedures to be followed, country code and standards expected.
