Coursework help sheets - Limitations / Evaluation

At the end of your analysis you need to write a section describing the ways in which you could have improved your coursework (limitations). You should describe the limitations of your method and your conclusion and how the limitations of your methods may have affected your final results.

The following bullet points should help you.

Limitations of your methods

  • Difficult to measure noise without proper equipment therefore you had to rely on your hearing/opinion which may have been unreliable.
  • Biased due to the fact that you may have lived in one of the areas. To overcome this you could have completed the survey with a friend.
  • Did you stay at each sample point for the same amount of time for your surveys?
  • Availability of house prices in your sample points.
  • If you had had more time, you could have completed more sample points and compared your town to another town.
  • Questionnaires – these can be unreliable and people are not always honest
  • Photographs can be misleading as they can make the area look better or worse than it actually is!
  • Weather – if the weather was different when you surveyed each area it can affect your results and your photos.
  • Hindsight – is there any way you would have tackled the project differently.
  • Change – were there any changes you made to your project as you went through it. If there were then you should describe what they were and why you made the changes.

Limitations to your conclusion

  • You need to explain how accurate you think your conclusions are
  • How accurate is the data you collected and how could it have been improved. For example – the traffic and pedestrian survey could have been conducted for a longer length of time or you could have compared different towns to get another view.
